Images of America: Bloomfield
|
|
Bloomfield is a compilation of nineteenth- and twentieth-century photographs showing the lives of those who most influenced and characterized the communities of Wintonbury and Bloomfield. It is a pictorial history that revisits the early days when industry was just beginning, and more recent times, as the town thrived with a progressive educational system and became the home of Connecticut General Insurance Company. While enjoying its closeness to Hartford, Bloomfield has developed a unique culture of its own, which is revealed in this fascinating history.
Formed fifty years ago, the Wintonbury Historical Society has created Bloomfield using images from its own collection, as well as private collections. Members of the society have worked diligently to preserve historical documents, records, and images, and are proud to share them in this extraordinary pictorial history.

The Browns of Wintonbury: Makers of Brown Drums
|
|
Introduction: Bloomfield citizens and Bloomfield business interests have always exhibited intense pride in the town's history, its inheritance, and its contributions to our state and
to our nation. The town has turned joyfully to strangers but, if the early citizens were once orphaned from Windsor, their pioneering and enterprising spirit carried them to higher visions. The elders
may have gone but they are not forgotten, and while some young men's music has stopped, their legacy lives on. This is the story of a few of Bloomfield's elders: Benjamin Brown, his brother Moses, Ben
Jr., Eli and his son of the same name, and William, a son of the younger Ben who departed this life at age 23. It is a story of the days of old, told anew.

The Good Old Days
|
|
In 1985 Bloomfield held a year–long celebration to commemorate its 250th anniversary. Eager to participate in this event, the Bloomfield Journal and the Wintonbury Historical
Society at the suggestion of Roberta Kania, Historian, invited people to share their remembrances of the Town's history. Many delightful articles were submitted and published. Topics focused on home
life, social events, interesting houses, and many other aspects of life in a rural community.
This current volume is a compilation by the Wintonbury Historical Society of many of the articles published in 1985. Virtually all of the articles and the introductions are in the exact
words and form of the writers. Although space would not permit reproduction of every article, a sincere effort has been made to include an entry from each person whose work was originally published in
the Bloomfield Journal. In essence, this collection reflects a people-oriented story from those and about those who witnessed and participated in the growth and development of Bloomfield in the
Good Old Days.
