Some information about the Southwest District School, as taken from the book From Wintonbury to Bloomfield:
The stone school was built in 1858 for the Southwest district on Simsbury Road just north of the previous building which had burned.
This building, across from the Old Prosser Inn, still stands (1983) and has been used for a variety of community purposes, prayer meetings, Salvation Army revivals, Temperance Society meetings, community groups such as the Thursday Afternoon Club, etc.
The Stone school building cost $288.15. Its low cost was due in part to the fact that much of the labor was performed by the “town poor.” Between the burning of the old and the building of the new, classes
were held across the street in the Madison Cadwell house—a convenient arrangement since the teacher was Elizabeth Cadwell.
After completion of the building, “all boards, lime, sand, mortar, stone, etc. left over” were sold at auction to W. M. Barnard for $2.25.
